Yavimaya Coast by Fyreant Yavimaya Coast by Fyreant
THIS piece sure brings back memories. I was still on staff at WOTC as a concept artist, and in line with my self-made title of Tree Boy I was given the task of developing the island of Yavimaya from the ground up. Yavimaya was supposed to have a Gaia-like, magical sentience. Assisted by the elvish population on the island, Yavimaya was the place on Dominaria where resistance to the Phyrexian invasion would be fiercest (as I imagined things). Yavimaya had grown herself a gigantic arsenal of vegetal, insect and animal weaponry to repel any invaders. Those huge arches going out into the ocean? Think of a tree with the body structure and musculature of a reticulated python. Phrexian machines wading ashore were summarily wrapped up and crushed.

I never had the opportunity to read the novels but in my mind, Yavimaya never got conquered.

Wow! I didn't knew about the story.
That's a really nice view of the coast of the never conquered Yavimaya Island.

Your art on MTG is fantastic, I don't play anymore but I still appreciate the art to this day. Me and my friends have always said that if WOTC were smart, they'd create a Dungeons and Dragons 4th ed champaign setting solely for Dominaria (since they own both products), instead of just ripping off players :-(

I loved this picture when I first saw it. Just the mixing of my two favorites, Island and Forest.
Amazing job pleased to see it again. Memories.

Your mind is right. In the novels, Yavimaya was never taken.

To make a long story short, much of the forest actually marched to Keld, fought the Phyrexians off there, then marched back. They fought off the invaders on the home front with heavy casualties, causing Multani to go into a three-cenury hibernation.

That sounds amazing. And completely believable, too! Man I'd love to see that on film.

Damn, man, me too. Definitely check out the MtG novels, especially the earlier ones. Almost all of them are dynamite reads. Some of them even have your artwork on the cover.

Seriously??? I don't think I was ever informed they used my art on a cover....I may have spaced that fact but space something so big? I kinda doubt it. Hm. I'll give 'em a spin, then! :D

I also might be hallucinating. I haven't gone through my MtG stuff in a while. I should go back and take a look...

I think some of my concept work made it inside a few of those books. Maybe that's where you remember seeing it?

Oooh, I was trying to remember why that name sounded familiar... I have a Yavimaya card or two in my deck.

Love the colors and concept for this one. Really seems like the forest is going to eat you up. Wouldn't put it past it, either~ ;3

I love the color palette here. The blues and greens really make this look like a lush island paradise. ^^
