Swarm Elemental

Hoo boy. It's a giant stag beetle (Swarm Elemental was the working title I was given when I got the assignment) made of lots of little beetles!

This was one of those occasions when I struggled to give the client what they wanted. The request was for a giant beetle thing made of "thousands of other insects". All in an illustration readable at the size of a postage stamp. I can think of ways in which I might be able to make such a thing work, in retrospect. At the same time, being a businessbeast means knowing when to push back. You will sometimes get assignments from people with little or no ability to visualize what they're asking for. It's up to you to help them see why what they want won't work, or to do your best, take the money and go. Both scenarios will occur more than once in your career, that I can guarantee.
