Artist's Comments

This piece (and several more to follow) were for Magic's Ravnica block, which is a couple years old now. For me, though, it was a great experience. I was part of the pre-development team and by the end, most of my original designs made it into the Styleguide anyway! That was a kick in the pants.

I'll include some of the concept work as well.

Drawn by hand, started in Painter XIII, finished in Photoshop 6.

The Ravnican lands are far and away the best land art ever produced/conceptualised for MtG in my opinion :)

I would heartily agree. :D

Ravnica is the best plane in MTG's history, and we owe it to you and the rest of painters.

Thanks for making such a wonderful world

Only, like, 10 comments?! This is one of my all-time favorite pieces!

Mr. Waters, you may or may not play Magic, but I do. And I am absolutely obsessive about lands. When I built my White-Green deck, I made sure that every land was from Ravnica; and I want you to know that this is my absolute favorite.

You blended the idea with ';plains' with the rest of white's philosophy; you made it look like a genuine city while still letting it stretch out and open - eve letting the horizon show.

The way that the shadows stretch long gives it a genuine 'evening' feel, rather than just throwing an orange sun in the sky and calling it a day
