Ravnica Blue by Fyreant Ravnica Blue by Fyreant
I'll admit it, I think Blue and Red are my least effective Land cards for Ravnica. Thing is, as an artist, you don't get to decide which of your pieces is the one people dig most. There will always be creations of yours that are close to your heart and very few others will "get" them. Other pieces that you might consider throwaways end up being fan favorites.

Remember this when you put your work out there, and if someone comes up to you and tells you how much they love one of those pieces of yours you hate, bite your tongue and smile. You succeeded in kindling something wonderful and it caught fire. Let that make you happy.

After all, it's not the last painting you'll ever do. Even if you hate it, you'll gain nothing by saying so, except to tarnish the compliment you're being served.

Ha ha you don't have to lake a painting for it to be good, this one is amazing (and I even have some magic cards of this island).

I really like the general feel/style of the buildings. Reminds me a great deal of MYST: URU.

The roughness of the buildings and the texture really give it this rusted/ water worn feel.

Sage advice my friend. And admittedly, I do enjoy the color composition that you've put into this one. The reason why being that it has a variance that makes it stand out moreso than the somewhat monochromatic look of other land arts.

Funny how you're saying people hate this, but the comments contradict you. This is a wonderful piece and you should not be ashamed of it.

You may not like this scene but I think it is wonderful and inspiring. It reminds me a lot of Waterfall City from Dinotopia. I can just hear the thunderous waterfalls and feel the mist soaking my clothes.

Wonderful job! Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

This has a definite James Gurney <[link]> feel. Of course, in the end, it is totally your own. The blue-red-purple and pink color combination just sparkles, and the depth and detail (especially in the upper right, and center) of the city are phenomenal.

Your work is [insert accolades here] and inspires my imagination both within the Magic game world and without.

What is your color-mixing technique? Do you simply pick colors and blend for intermediaries? Any advice for aspiring illustrators still struggling to get everything balanced?

(Hope you don't mind such pedantic questions).

Cheers!

Even if you've done better pieces -and I'm sure you have-, this one is still beautiful and quite impressive. To tell the truth, I exchanged some of my land cards to have five of this very painting on my deck.

I agree with the description, because this is one of my favourites in your gallery. I just think that it is like that because it looks more 'finished' than some others, not because the others aren't beautyful.

Ok, I just realized how much I've seen your art without knowing it!

So not only have I found out that you made the griffon for the DD Monster manuel, but this was also in a book by Rob Alexander on Fanasty landscapes and cityscapes. (Which I'm sure would know about already XD ) Here's a question I should ask - Where isn't your art?!?! Next thing I know I'll find something else...you just wait. XD ^^

So I guess that means I have been a fan of yours without knowing it.....that's deffinatly a first for me.

Anyways, to comment on the actual artwork...
I really like the mood/feeling that this picture gives off. Quite a unique one I must say. Besides that it's kind of difficult for me to explain. Your eye for detail is amazing and the texture you've used for this is just superb. It really has quite the personality.

The color palette was a good choice too.

and I love the detail to bits, but my favorite part would actually have to be the buildings in the background. Maybe its the great color scheme, maybe its the detail/shapes, I'm not sure, but they look freakin awesome.

I can't really give my opinion on what I think should be fixed, because I really don't see anything wrong with it.

Amazing style man!

(I'll have to look around some more to see if I run into any more of your art. hee hee)

Thank you for your thought on people liking artwork we hate. It happens often, and I guess it's accented here on Deviant Art, with the favorites system. My most faved picture is not one I hate but one I least cherish, as, let us admit it, at least 60% of its "charme" comes from the fact that it shows a rather sexy character, and not the technique by itself. Likewise, there is a piece I'm very attached to which seems to be almost ignored by people.
But your comment on this picture of yours helped me reconsidering some of my positions, and of this I am grateful to you as much as for sharing your stunning and inspiring art.

You're too hard on yourself. It's a fantastic piece of work.

Though I did notice that the Ravnica island art don't depict so much "islands" as "waterfall cities." Well, the whole planet is a ecumenopolis, I guess.

Thank you! I loved doing pre-concept work for the Ravnica block. The idea of a world-wide city has fascinated me ever since I first heard of it. Magic's environment made the setting even weirder than it would have been. There was a lot of resistance from R&D initially, but once the card art started coming in they got on board.
