It's the Toe Beast! Among a great many other things. What is it exactly? I have no idea. Once again They came to the Beast in the Cage (that would be me) and said, "We need something weird." And I said, "Okay!"

The Ultimus has the power to become other critters; that's it's thang. My art request was for a beast that looked like a strange amalgam of body parts. There you go. Add to that textures from seashells, bones, eggs and a dog swimming in the Sammamish Slough and what do you get?

....this. Hmm.

Pencil roughs, Photoshop 6 with Painter 6 over the top of that.

Wow.

Pity Lorwyn undermined the value of this guy. But well, I remember an article on Wizards site that it was the taste of his own medicine for Ultimus, making other guys not unique anymore.
