Artist's Comments

Another piece from the last Time Spiral deck. They wanted an environment full of sadness and morbidity. Yay, my bread and butter! Go off my meds for a little while, make a picture. Sometimes you feel so sad.

Again, all Photoshop, no extra preservatives or MSG.

Whooaaa, really cool piece!

I really love this one. I can't possibly think of a reason why WotC decided to change this grand piece of art for the Shadowmoor version (not that the new art by Rob Alexander is bad at all, but this one's better and absolutely kicks ass IMO)

Congrats!

Love the atmospheric lighting.

I'll be honest, this was one of my all-time favorite Magic cards. The way your art fit into the frame perfectly, both in terms of color and placement, made the whole thing feel very "whole." When I think of a cool land in Magic, I think of this card, Graven Cairns, and I think of this art.

It's always amazing to view Magic art up close, too, as you can actually start to see the artist's "hand" in the piece, and how seemingly random brush strokes blend together into something completely convincing at a distance.

Anyway, enough gushing. Definite favorite.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

wow, really stunning!

Yeah, sad and morbid indeed... you actually brought tears to my eyes. Shucks.

Take care, dude... beautiful art here.

ah, graven cairns. a giant stone vampire head in a river of blood certainly puts "sadness and morbidity" across rather well. seen at this resolution it's an even greater piece. i like it much. great work, sir.

I sought the site of Magic:the Gathering for this card. I believe it's called "Graven Cairns" in the Future Sight card set.
And I hate to say it but the new graphic for Magic cards does not make this picture justice. Which is too bad. It makes me wish there were a print of it, but I understand that there must be problems in doing that with art you did for Wizards...

Ultimately, it's got to be about the game, not the art. I'd love it if Wizards did another good art book! There's so much good art in Magic, players deserve the chance to get a better look at it.
:iconsunamori:
Yeah, I'd love it too.
Once I found a calendar with some illustrations, among which there were a couple done by D. Alexander Gregory, which used to be my favorite illustrator (I collected all of his art up to Kamigawa, then I stopped playing the game altogether). Do you happen to know him?
Heh, if there was an extensive art book which features this picture of yours, I'd surely buy it, no second thoughts.

Indeed! As a matter of fact, we work at the same video-game company, not one desk apart. He's hale and hearty, and still doing the odd Magic card (as am I).

One of these days I'll have an art book of me own, and when I do, I'll tell all!
